What is the Significance of Division of Work in Organizing?

The entire philosophy of organization is centered on the concepts of specialization and division of work. The division of work is assigning responsibility for each organizational component to a specific individual or group thereof.

It becomes specialization when the responsibility for a specific task lies with a designated expert in that field. The efforts of the operatives are coordinated to allow the process at hand to function correctly.

A job can be defined as the tasks performed by individuals in achieving the organizational goals. All employees like to know what is expected of them and how they will be evaluated. Job descriptions can also be a great value to employers. Creating a job description often results in a thought process that helps determine how critical the job is, how this particular job relates to others and identify the characteristics needed by a new employee filling the note.

On the other hand, job specification is a statement which tells us minimum acceptable human qualities which helps to perform a job. Job specification helps in hiring an appropriate person for an appropriate position.

  • Job Enrichment i.e. providing motivation to the employees.
  • Job Rotation i.e. moving from one job to another, and
  • Job Enlargement i.e. increasing the scope of a job through additional tasks.

When the size of the organization is small many tasks are performed by a single person but when the size of organization grows the jobs will be assigned to the different persons on the basis of specializations. In the tourism scenario, job rotation is a common phenomenon. This offers the variety to the staff members and upgrades their professional qualifications.
