Characteristics of Philosophical Thinking of Interpretivists.


Interpretivists have derived their thoughts using micro approaches and have not given any specific theory of philosophy. They did not advocate any determinism but supported free will to interpret behavior in right perspective.

They did not deal with metaphysics or epistemology, therefore, their expositions are entirely and exclusively for the classroom settings where actually knowledge is transacted.

Characteristics of philosophical thinking of interpretivists are as follows:

Reality is constructed from daily life experiences. In order to bring about changes in education and society, we need to promote. autonomy and freedom in actions.

Knowledge is constructed by grasping the meaning that people give to their behaviour. These meanings are personal in nature. An individual gives meaning not only to his own actions but also to the actions of others. includes things like age, gender, motivation, logic and attitude etc.

According to interpretativists, it is the interpretation of daily life activities that determine behaviour, attitude and values of an individual.

Interaction or effective interaction between teacher and student is necessary to make education meaningful. For understanding this process of interaction, we need to use commonsense assumptions.

Interpretativists are dynamic in their approach. Through the process of interaction, they keep negotiating on meaning which is an ongoing process.

It is important to observe a situation closely and understand that interpretations are subjective in nature.

Aims and Goals of Interpretivists:

Education must enable a learner to make right interpretations and reveal following aims and goals of education:

Ability to interpret the behavior of an individual in right context.

Ability to understand and remove the limitations of interpretations and adopting means to negotiation for a right meaning.

Ability to understand symbolic interaction and being able to take decisions by the learners self-conceptions and the conception of others perception.

Providing opportunities for ,experiential knowledge so that they get to know how to interpret an experience or derive meanings from it.

Developing ability for adaptation which is of eight types namely, ingratiation, compliance, ritualism, opportunism, colonization, intransigence and rebellion.

Developing a positive attitude towards the goals and aims.
